LANGUAGES DEPARTMENT
Without language, one cannot talk to people
and understand them;
one cannot share their hopes and aspirations,
grasp their history,
appreciate their poetry
or savour their songs.
I realised we were not different people with separate languages;
we were one people, with different tongues.
Nelson Mandela
At Grace Lutheran College we value the learning of Languages other than English.
Students have the opportunity to study either Japanese or German in year 8 with the option of continuing these studies on throughout their school life.
As a language department, we feel it is vital for our students to experience firsthand both the language and culture of Germany and Japan. We think it is important for students to have the opportunity to meet people from both of these countries and form relationships with people of these cultures that may extend past their time at school.

Students have the opportunity to experience the language that they study, firsthand by being involved in home stay for students who visit the College from Germany and Japan. Students who continue their study of language into the senior school have the opportunity to travel on exchange or tour to Japan and Germany.
Grace Lutheran College has sister school agreements with schools in Saarland and Frankfurt in Germany and Shizuoka and Hakata in Japan.

Ultimately, as language teachers we look to provide our students opportunities for personal growth, for experiencing their studied language in action and building relationships and tolerance between students of different cultures around the world.
