HEALTH & PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Grace Lutheran College recognizes the important place of physical activity in the overall education of its students. Physical Education is a compulsory subject for all students from Years 8 to 12 (including Year 7 from 2008), and the Department's major aim is to encourage lifelong participation in and enjoyment of a variety of physical activities. Staff also stress to students the important health benefits of physical activity. Where possible, Physical Education occurs in single gender classes in Years 8 and 9, in an effort to remove some of the barriers to participation, which have previously been encountered. Over a number of years, this has proven to be very successful amongst both boys and girls, with both rates and levels of participation increasing.
As well as compulsory core Physical Education, students may elect to study other subjects within our area. In Years 9 and 10, students may undertake Health and Physical Education as an elective subject, whilst in Years 11 and 12, students may study Health Education and / or Physical Education, both of which are Authority subjects, contributing to the students' OP. Information regarding the content of these subjects can be found in the course outline booklets for each Year level.
Grace Lutheran College has a wonderful array of facilities for Physical Education. An 8-lane, 25 metre swimming pool, vast playing fields for soccer, hockey, touch and Australian Rules and outdoor courts for tennis, basketball, netball and volleyball have been added to recently with the opening of an excellent Multi-Purpose Centre, able to cater for the traditional indoor sports as well as such activities as dance, table tennis, badminton and futsal. Staff members are on duty in the pool and MPC during most lunch times, to allow students to make the most of the facilities at their disposal.
Students need to change into and out of their physical education uniform in the breaks immediately preceding and following their lesson. Hats are necessary for all outdoor lessons except for swimming, and shoes need to be non-marking in the MPC. Back to Programs |
